You were right about Sunday. It's the cheapest and the most available, for one simple reason — it contains no Friday or Saturday nights.

Weekend rates here run 15–40% above midweek — Brewery Gulch averages $515 Sun–Thu against $718 Fri/Sat. Saturday nights also trigger two-night minimums almost everywhere and sell out first.

The one cost: Café Beaujolais, The Brickery and Fog Eater all close Monday and Tuesday. Fixable — Trillium and MacCallum House open every night, and Cucina Verona in Fort Bragg does a 3-course Tuesday dinner for $25. Book Trillium ahead for both nights.

Also worth knowing: Great Day in Elk — its 50th — is Sat 29 Aug, 17 miles south. It fills Elk and Albion and puts traffic on Highway 1. Option C misses it entirely.

Highway 128 is the easy half

90 minutes of steady curves, but wide, well-surfaced, no cliff edge. Sustained concentration, not technical.
Fuel at Cloverdale or Navarro — nothing in between.

The coast road is the hard one

Leave by 9am and take only two stops. It's 4h30 of driving before you add anything.
Cut inland at Bodega Bay via Valley Ford to Petaluma. Skips the tightest section of all and saves 40 minutes.
Driving south you sit on the inland side, away from the drop. The loop direction is the right way round.

Where to stay

Base in Mendocino village (walk to dinner, headlands out the door) or Little River, five minutes south and cheaper. Not Anderson Valley — you'd drive an hour to the coast every day.

Searching Airbnb properly

Enter the dates first — 30 Aug to 2 Sep, 2 guests. That alone filters out anything with a 4-night minimum, which is the trap. Three-night minimums are fine and common.
Drag the map over Mendocino, Little River and Albion rather than searching a town name — the good places are strung along Highway 1 and the labels are inconsistent.

The four days

Sun 30 · upGoats, then redwoods

Leave at 7:45am. Boonville is 2h15 away and the tour is at 10:30.
Pennyroyal Farm, 10:30am — $30 each. A goat and sheep dairy: 45 minutes round the barn to meet the animals, then a cheese tasting. They pour grape juice instead of wine for the driver, which solves that neatly. Book on Tock.
Hendy Woods — old-growth redwoods right on the road, $8 a car. The Discovery Trail is 0.6 miles and flat. Warmer and less foggy than the coastal groves.
Navarro Vineyards for a picnic lunch — $10 tasting, deli case, and famously good non-alcoholic grape juice.
In Mendocino by 3pm. Walk the headlands at sunset — two miles of bluff path looping the village, free, sea arches and blowholes.

Mon 31Rail bikes and a punchbowl

Skunk Train rail bikes — ~$313 for the two of you. Pedal-powered bikes on the old logging line, seven miles through redwoods with a 50-minute stop at Glen Blair Junction. Book this now — it's the one thing that sells out.
Glass Beach is ten minutes from the depot. Honest warning: the glass is now pea-sized fragments in shingle, not the carpet in the photos. Twenty minutes of mild curiosity.
Russian Gulch — the Devil's Punchbowl. A collapsed sea cave 100 ft across and 60 ft deep, on a flat half-mile loop. Best effort-to-spectacle ratio here.
Sweetwater Eco Spa in the evening — communal redwood hot tub and cedar sauna, $30 each, five minutes' walk. Book a week ahead. (Communal is clothing-optional; private tubs are more.)

Driving ~40 min all day

Tue 1Two kinds of water

Kayak Mendocino sea caves — $80 each, 9am or 11:30am. Out of the sheltered cove at Van Damme and into the cliffs — caves full of sea stars, then a seal colony. Van Damme is protected enough that it runs in fog when nothing else does. Phone only: 707-813-7117, pay on the day.
Catch a Canoe — $60 each. Redwood outrigger canoes up the Big River estuary, 8 miles of completely undeveloped tidal river. Launch around 9:30–10am and the tide carries you up and back.
Dinner at Cucina Verona in Fort Bragg — the Tuesday 3-course is $25.

Driving ~30 min all day

Wed 2 · backDown the coast

Leave by 9am. Two stops only, or this becomes a nine-hour day.
Point Arena Lighthouse — $10 each. You climb it: 115 feet, the tallest climbable lighthouse on the Pacific coast, with the original Fresnel lens in the museum below. An hour from Mendocino, open daily.
Fort Ross — $10 a car. A reconstructed 1812 Russian stockade with an Orthodox chapel on the bluff. No food, so bring lunch — there are picnic tables inside the compound. Keep the parking receipt; it's valid at any California state park the same day.
Cut inland at Bodega Bay and home via Petaluma.

Don't bother

Bowling Ball Beach — needs a negative tide. Your dates have none, and the best lows are before sunrise. The balls stay underwater

Montgomery Woods — the access road is the most demanding in the region, for redwoods you'll already have seen
Van Damme Fern Canyon — trail closed for storm damage. The pygmy forest boardwalk is open
Anderson Valley Brewing tours — discontinued. The disc golf is still free
Botanical Gardens — $48 for the two of you, surrounded by free coastline

Small print

Weather & packing

61–69°F by day, 45–56°F at night. Foggy most mornings, usually burning off by midday.
A windproof shell matters more than a raincoat — it barely rains, but it blows.
Sea is 54°F. Wetsuit territory, not swimming.
Anderson Valley is a different climate — inland was forecast in the 90s this week. Pack one warm-weather outfit for the drive up.

Roads & air

Nothing affects the drive up via 101 and 128.
One-way control from a rock slide north of Point Arena — only matters on the lighthouse day.
The 30-minute Westport delay clears on 31 Aug and is north of Fort Bragg anyway.
Highway 1 between Jenner and Fort Ross has ongoing subsidence and drops to one lane without warning. Check roads.dot.ca.gov before you leave.
Air quality on the coast is currently clean. The Feliz and Woodside fires are both 70–80% contained and demobilising. Worth a look at Watch Duty a few days before.
