Mendocino

Finding it

• Highway 1 to Albion, then inland/east on Albion Ridge Road about 1.9 miles to G Road.
• Travis warns G Road "comes up quite suddenly on the left" — and there's no phone signal to re-route with. Download the map before Cloverdale.
• Left on G (Gaea) Road North, second driveway on the left. Look for the white flag; numbers 3402 and 32170.

What this changes

• You're on the ridge, not in the valley — which is the better half of Albion for a phone signal.
• 15:00 check-in fits the drive up perfectly: Pennyroyal at 10:30, Hendy Woods after, arrive mid-afternoon.
• 11:00 checkout is later than ideal — but Albion is 30 min further down the coast than Mendocino, so both stops still fit and you'd be home around 18:00. Just don't dawdle over breakfast.
• Albion is 30 min south of Mendocino village, so add that to every day trip.

Highway 128 is the easy half

• 90 minutes of steady curves, but wide, well-surfaced, no cliff edge. Sustained concentration, not technical.
• Fuel at Cloverdale or Navarro — nothing in between.

The coast road is the hard one

• Leave by 9am and take only two stops. It's 4h30 of driving before you add anything.
• Cut inland at Bodega Bay via Valley Ford to Petaluma. Skips the tightest section of all and saves 40 minutes.
• Driving south you sit on the inland side, away from the drop. The loop direction is the right way round.

Five minutes down the ridge

• Paddle the Albion River ⭐ — the marina at the river mouth rents kayaks at $30 for four hours, canoes at $40, first-come, no booking. It's flat tidal water through redwoods: no surf, no skill needed. Launch about 90 minutes before high tide if you want to go upstream. Genuinely the best-value thing here and almost nobody writes about it.
• The Albion River Bridge — the last big wooden trestle bridge in California. Pullouts either side, and the best sunset within ten minutes. Sunset is around 7:45pm all week.
• Navarro Beach — a wide driftwood beach at the river mouth, dramatic and usually near-empty. 8 min
• Navarro River Redwoods — the eleven-mile "redwood tunnel to the sea" along Highway 128, free to drive, and river swimming at the Paul M. Dimmick day-use area. Late August is when the river is warm and low.

Twenty minutes

• Russian Gulch — the Devil's Punchbowl ⭐ a collapsed sea cave 100 ft across and 60 ft deep, on a flat half-mile loop. Best spectacle-per-step on the coast. 21 min
• Mendocino Headlands — two to three miles of bluff path looping the village, free, sea arches and blowholes. With the moon at 90% this week it's worth doing after dinner. 19 min
• Little River Blowhole — a half-mile flat trail from the cemetery to a 60-foot punchbowl connected to the sea by a tunnel that floods at high tide. Don't climb down — the sides are actively eroding, and there's heavy poison oak just off the path. 15 min
• Van Damme pygmy forest — a quarter-mile boardwalk through a genuinely strange stunted forest, off Airport Road, free. Note Fern Canyon is still part-closed from storm damage. 20 min
• Greenwood State Beach, Elk — sea stacks and the old lumber-wharf rocks offshore, free, and almost nobody there. Pick up sandwiches from the Elk Store opposite. No phone signal in Elk at all. 24 min
• Big River canoes — redwood outrigger canoes up eight miles of undeveloped tidal estuary, $60 each. The alternative to the Albion River if you want the bigger version. 20 min

Worth the drive · and two to skip

• Fort Bragg — the rail bikes, and Noyo Harbour for scruffy excellent seafood. 34 min
• Point Cabrillo Light Station — grounds free, museum $5. The climb-to-the-lens tour is Sat/Sun 11–2 only, so your Sunday arrival day is the only chance and you'll be driving. Let it go. 28 min
• Beach horse riding at Ten Mile Beach, from $65 each for an hour, if that appeals more than a boat. ~55 min
• skip Glass Beach — the glass is now pea-sized fragments mixed into shingle, not the carpet in the photos. Twenty minutes of mild curiosity, and you'll be in Fort Bragg anyway.
• skip Botanical Gardens — $48 for the two of you, surrounded by free coastline that's more dramatic.

Albion Grocery — the most useful thing nearby

• Five minutes down the ridge, daily 7am–7pm. Groceries, a deli counter, grass-fed beef, produce, a real wine and spirits selection — and petrol and propane.
• It removes the main failure mode of self-catering somewhere remote: you forgot something and it's dark. 707-937-5784 to check hours — it has no website.
• For a proper shop, Harvest at Mendosa's in the village is open daily till 10pm. Corners of the Mouth next door is better for produce.

Buy the wine on the way up

• Navarro Vineyards, Philo — daily 9–6, no booking. Tasting $10 each, refunded if you buy six bottles. Deli case, Pennyroyal cheeses, picnic tables. Widely rated the best tasting room in the state, and they sell mostly direct so you won't find these at home.
• Pennyroyal Farm, Boonville — daily 10–5, and you're there for the 10:30 farm tour anyway. Buy the cheese too.
• Both are on Highway 128 as you drive in, so it's no detour. Albion Grocery is the fallback.

Weather — forecast, not averages

Pulled 16 Aug, so 14 days out and low confidence — but the signal is much better than the seasonal norm. Re-run data/weather.py nearer the time.

• Essentially no fog forecast. 1–7% cloud and nearly 13 hours of sunshine a day, against a late-August norm of grey mornings. If it holds, you've got the good version of this coast.
• It's 95°F in Anderson Valley on the Sunday. Pack shorts for the drive up — and the Navarro river swimming at Paul M. Dimmick goes from optional to obvious.
• But nights drop to 47°F. A 27-degree swing, because the ridge is inland and the skies are clear. You'll want a proper jumper for the deck after dinner.
• Winds light at 8–10 mph, which is good news for the kayak.
• ⚠️ Tue 1 and Wed 2 are still beyond the model. Check again around the 25th.

Petrol, signal, roads

• ⛽ Albion Grocery does petrol, five minutes away, daily 7–7. Fill there before the drive home — none in Elk, and a 65-mile gap between Gualala and Jenner. Mendocino County averages about $5.83/gal, so top up in Cloverdale on the way up where it's cheaper.
• 📵 No signal on Albion Ridge, and none at all in Elk. Download offline maps before Cloverdale. Travis warns the G Road turning "comes up quite suddenly on the left."
• The cabin's WiFi password only appears 48 hours before check-in — save it while you're still in signal.
• 🛣 Nothing affects the drive up via 101 and 128. One-way control from a rock slide north of Point Arena won't touch you. Highway 1 between Jenner and Fort Ross has ongoing subsidence and drops to one lane without warning — check roads.dot.ca.gov before you leave.
• 🔥 Air on the coast is currently clean; the Feliz and Woodside fires are both contained. Worth a look at Watch Duty a few days before.
